Thanks for a wonderful blog post Catherine. I’m so sorry that the RA is interfering with your career and crushing some ambitions. I’m in a similar situation in that I’ve had to go part time and am severely limited in what I can do at work these days. Thank goodness for the (UK) Equality Act or I’m sure I’d be out of a job completely by now. Keep fighting and keep writing. As you say, we must keep working towards a better normal…..love as ever from Naomi.

Extremely brave post Cath. Those of us with this disease know what a struggle coming to this stage of acceptance is,and how difficult it can be to accept our new reality when it feels so much like admitting defeat. Thank you for sharing your experiences openly, hopefully in doing so you will continue to spread awareness, which in turn can only bring understanding and support for those of us who hope to share your “better normal”.

One of my colleagues used the term “research prostitution” when referring to AERA. I last went @ 4 years ago and was not very impressed. Maybe it is time to form a QAERA? I wonder if AERA just got too big and unfocused to have any sort of positive effect or influence – and too big to really promote effective dialogue and change.

I believe that this is the same state that has banned ethnic studies at the K-12 level. Period. No ethnic studies, no infusion of literature that might cause ‘resentment’ or ‘ethnic pride’. So this isn’t surprising. :/

At this point, I would argue that there is very little that is educational or scholarly with AERA. It’s all of the institutional butt-covering careerism, all of the time.

Yep, yep. AERA sucks, as usual. Maybe we should redefine the acronym as American Educators as Raging A&#%!^$. Is there anything progressive about educational institutions and associations these days?
