North Carolina Congresswoman and professional homophobe, Virginia Foxx, has been tapped to be the new head of the House subcommittee on education.
In 2009, Foxx proved her homophobe cred in a speech during the Congressional debates over Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. With Shepard’s mom Judy in the audience, Foxx spouted:
I also would like to point out that there was a bill — the hate crimes bill that’s called the Matthew Shepard bill is named after a very unfortunate incident that happened where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery. It wasn’t because he was gay. This — the bill was named for him, hate crimes bill was named for him, but it’s really a hoax that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills.”
Yes, those confessions of Matt’s killers were merely pro-gay propaganda. As Congressman John Lewis observed at the time:
She should be ashamed. That is unreal, unbelievable. The law enforcement people and almost every reasonable person I know believes he was murdered because he was gay.
That Foxx was selected by the GOP leadership to head the House’s education subcommittee sends a clear message to queer students everywhere–your lives are beneath contempt. There is NO chance of any federal legislation aiding queer kids passing with this hater in-charge of the House education subcommittee.
Too bad queer kids. President Obama could have acted in October, but he chose to remain silent on Safe Schools Improvement Act in the midst of all of the queer suicides. Thanks to Obama’s silence and the House GOP’s lethal homophobia, we now have an UNDERTAKER in charge of federal education legislation for at least the next 2 years.
