Louisiana Christian taxpayers fund Muslim schools.

Now, before anyone thinks I’ve totally flipped my proverbial lid, here’s the background on this story.

Louisiana passed and Gov. Bobby Jindal signed into a law a sweeping voucher bill that contains no state oversight of schools that receive taxpayer funded vouchers. The state is now providing vouchers to parents who want to send their children to the school of their choice, including religious schools.

But now, some GOP lawmakers in this fine state are howling because they didn’t realize that children would be able to attend Muslim parochial schools (*oh, the horror!* SNARK!). These models of civic republicanism wanted the voucher bill to be for Christians-only. As Rep. Valarie Hodges (R-theocracy) opined:

“I actually support funding for teaching the fundamentals of America’s Founding Fathers’ religion, which is Christianity, in public schools or private schools,” the District 64 Representative said Monday.

“I liked the idea of giving parents the option of sending their children to a public school or a Christian school,” Hodges said.

Now, Representative Hodges *IS* dumber than a box of hammers–or as Molly Ivins once observed (and I’m paraphrasing), “If her IQ drops any lower we’ll have to water her twice a day.” But clearly a combination of theological smugness and intellectual laziness led her to support a bill that is unconstitutional and harmful to the public system. This moronic bill will further shift public funds away from a poorly funded public system.
