Billy Graham hates teh gays sooooo muuuch

that he purchased a full-page ad in today’s Wall Street Journal to encourage readers to vote against “abortion and gay marriage.” The message is typical Dominionist twaddle. From Gawker:

The legacy we leave behind for our children, grandchildren, and this great nation is crucial. As I approach my 94th birthday, I realize this election could be my last. I believe it is vitally important that we cast our ballots for candidates who base their decisions on biblical principles and support the nation of Israel. I urge you to vote for those who protect the biblical definition of marriage between a man and a woman. Vote for biblical values this November 6, and pray with me that America will remain one nation under God.

I hope the IRS takes a dim view on this. Why or why is this long time politician (50+ years!) entitled to a federal tax exemption?

Also, far be it for a godless, socialist, queer, patriotic American to opine on theology, but Rev. Graham has the god/jesus as “lucky rabbit’s foot” thing going on. If you just keep stroking the rabbit foot, we/you will be protected. Clearly, Rev. Graham has slept through the Book of Job. Just sayin.

Bottom line? The US is no more “One Nation Under God,” than we are “One Nation Under Allah,” “Buddha,” “Satan” or “Skippy the Wonder Dog.” For those who don’t believe me, I double dog dare you to find the words “God” and/or Jesus in the US Constitution. Graham knows this, of course, he’s a sharp political operator. But clearly, he’s hoping the devout are blindly devout on this one.

  1. Skippy the Wonder Dog? I always thought the One Nation Under God part (or In God We Trust) was about money, and not about Christianity. This, of course, comes a Christian, social democratic, hetero and oddly patriotic American. And by the way, of course Graham took out a full-page ad in the WSJ, which means most of the devout won’t ever see the ad.

  2. Whenever I come across people like Billy Graham I am reminded of the research that shows strong homophobic feelings are often held by self-identified heterosexuals who are secretly struggling with same-sex attraction/ arousal.
