Graham Spanier, moral worm

As I was working on a blog post for UCEA, I did some double checking and ran across this piece of information.*

Spanier graduated from Highland Park High School (Highland Park, Illinois), and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Iowa State University where he was honored with the Distinguished Achievement Citation by the ISU Alumni Association in 2004. He earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Northwestern University where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. While a researcher, he contributed to the publication of ten books and over 100 scholarly journal articles. As a family sociologist, demographer, and marriage and family therapist, he was the founding editor of the Journal of Family Issues.

If this is accurate, Spanier holds or once held professional licensure as a marriage and family therapist. If he holds licensure in Pennsylvania, he is a “mandated reporter,” that is, if he is aware of allegations of child abuse, he must report these to the police. The penalty for not report is licensure revocation.

Given his research and professional specialty, Spanier is a moral worm. He KNEW and KNOWS the risks by NOT reporting Sandusky, and alleged pedophile, to the police. But it appears that keeping that revenue stream from football was more important than the health and safety of children.

*While I would normally, never, ever, ever link to Wikipedia, given its problems with veracity, I can’t seem to find Spanier’s official PSU bio on line. I do have a PDF copy which is attached.spanierbio
